In early March, Dr. Terry Davis led a small group to Kenya to witness all that is happening at Rafiki Children’s Center. The group consisted of fellow Rotarian Steve Heiser from the Columbus Club and his wife, Karen, a colleague at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Also along were Ted and Bobbie Celeste, pillars of First Community Church, which has been a huge supporter of Rafiki. Rounding out the group was Arnett Howard – a very popular jazz musician in the central Ohio area. Reverend John Nganga was able to join them from Florida.

April 2016 Rafiki Update

  • By Dr. Terry Davis

It didn’t seem quite right to be at Rafiki without John Nganga, the founder and CEO of Rafiki whose original vision and constant “pressing on” for 18 years has Rafiki photo 1been the underpinning of the entire project. However, we are so grateful that
his health is holding up with the help of a skillful medical team, a dedicated wife and family, and the Grace of God. God willing, John is currently planning a return to Rafiki this summer. For this trip, John’s cousin Eston Kihara had been here for several days when I arrived, and represented John for the many events we had packed into a few days. Eston has just become a member of the US Rafiki Board.

End of year educational trip

Rafiki Academy pupils and teachers took an end of year field trip to the game park in Nyahururu. Thanks to Rafiki drivers Ndungu and Kairie for their careful driving. John Kiarie is one of the Rafiki beneficiaries. The kids look forward to this trip every year. Thanks Rafiki sponsors and parents of the community kids for making this happen. Thank God we did not have to rent a bus, the Lord has provided using Friends of Rafiki in the USA. Join us in prayers as we trust God for another larger bus. The Academy continues to grow and with excellent academic results from 2015 pupils, we anticipate more students coming this year.

KCPE results: Rafiki students excel

The first candidates from the Rafiki Academy have done very well. Our top student got 344 marks out of 500. These are very high marks and we thank God for all the teachers and the supporting cast for all the hard work under the Head Teacher Barnard and all the board members. Watch out 2016, we are coming. Congratulations!

As of our July 2012 update, Rafiki Academy had started and was doing reasonably well with three classes (Preschool, Grades 1 and 2), but enrollment was somewhat anemic at about 35 students. The problem was transportation. We didn’t have a school bus that could pick up the students in town (an hour or so walk) to come to classes at the Academy. Thanks to major donations from the Rotary Club of Columbus and First Community Church, the bus became a reality. Enrollment has exploded!

Rafiki Academy moves forward

Perhaps the most ambitious of all of our projects at this point is to bring education of our kids in- house. The establishment of Rafiki Academy is the embodiment of that dream. Our own school, our own Principal and teachers, classes of 25 students rather than 50 or 60, will greatly benefit our kids. But they won’t be isolated. Fully 2/3rds of the students will be from the community (and be paying us school fees they would pay to the government) so that we will be fostering good relations with the community.

Four extra rooms in the Newark Rotary Technical School are being refurbished to accommodate three of the early classes (up to Form I). A generous grant from Rotary Clubs and District 6690 in central Ohio, areproviding the funds for equipment and supplies in the classrooms, including computers. Bryan Beske is pivotal in our long term efforts to develop an endowment fund to finance the school in perpetuity. All the physical equipment in the classrooms (excluding computer and electronic equipment) is made on site by Rafiki’s carpenters, welders, and others.

In the meantime, our biggest single budget item is school fees for all of our kids, which will continue for the many years it will take us to ramp up Rafiki Academy. Generous support from the Mission Council of First Community Church is helping us with that all important aspect of our mission.
